Polignano a Mare is a small town in the province of Bari on the Adriatic coast. In ancient times called Neapolis, Polignano offers the spectacular characteristic of its caves. These were formed as a result of the action of the wave motion of the sea which moulded the calcareous rock, and some of the caves are so deep that they reach down to the centre of the town.

The most interesting to visit are the famous Grotta Palazzese, which you enter into from the outside by means of an internal stairway; the Grotta Stalattitica and the Grotta della Foca (the Cave of the Seal). Some signs of human presence dating back to the Palaeolithic age have been found in these caves.
